History and tradition

The first ever Dresden Striezelmarkt only lasted a day. In the year 1434, Elector Frederick II of Saxony and his brother Duke Sigismund gave their approval for an open-air market at the city’s Altmarkt ‘on the day before Christmas Eve’. Over the half-century that followed, the Dresden Striezelmarkt became one of the most popular and traditional Christmas markets in Germany. Every year, more than 240 traders and performers travel there to sell their wares and do justice to the Striezelmarkt’s reputation as being a showcase of traditional folk art.
