Opening of the 585th Dresden Striezelmarkt
A traditional oecumenical church service is held at Dresden’s Kreuzkirche at 3pm on 27 November 2019 to mark the opening of the 585th Dresden Striezelmarkt.
This is an opportunity for over 3,000 visitors, locals and tourists to participate in this official opening ceremony of Germany’s oldest Christmas market. Seating and entry are free.
Once the start of Advent has officially been declared in the church, visitors and distinguished guests head out into the Altmarkt square – to the musical sounds and melodies of a miners’ orchestra, the Light Angels (Lichter-Engel), and the miner (Bergmann), along with the youth choir – to open the Striezelmarkt at the traditional marketplace.
The 585th Dresden Striezelmarkt will be officially opened at a ceremony with Dresden Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert at the ‘Dresden story stage’ at around 4pm. This traditionally involves lighting up Germany’s oldest Christmas market, symbolically starting up the world’s largest Ore Mountain step pyramid, and the lord mayor cutting and publicly tasting the original Dresden Christstollen. As the twinkling lights of the Striezelmarkt turn on, so too do the market stalls open. The opening ceremony is concluded by the Striezelmarkt Santa, who performs his new Santa song.
